1.5 Sem and 1st Year in Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture Degree Reflections:
As a first-year architecture student entering Semester 1.5, the journey thus far has been a transformative and enriching experience. From delving into the realms of sustainable architecture to exploring innovative design strategies, each project undertaken has offered invaluable lessons and insights, shaping my perspective on the built environment and my role as a future architect.
Engaging in projects focused on green buildings and maximizing daylight and thermal comfort in modern houses has broadened my understanding of the multifaceted nature of architecture. Through these projects, I have come to appreciate the intricate relationship between architecture and the environment, recognizing the pivotal role architects play in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change.
The exploration of green buildings has highlighted the importance of sustainable design principles in mitigating the impacts of climate change and promoting healthier living environments. Conducting research on various accreditation systems and visiting green buildings firsthand has deepened my appreciation for the innovative environmental strategies employed in sustainable architecture. It has also underscored the need for greater public awareness and recognition of the significance of green buildings in shaping a more sustainable future.
Similarly, the project focused on maximizing daylight and thermal comfort in modern houses has provided me with valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities inherent in sustainable design. Through fieldwork and data collection, I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of passive design principles in achieving comfort and reducing energy consumption. Collaborating with peers to brainstorm creative solutions has fostered a sense of teamwork and collective responsibility towards promoting sustainable practices in architecture.
These projects have not only enhanced my technical skills but have also instilled in me a sense of purpose and responsibility as a future architect. As I reflect on my journey as a first-year student, I am inspired to continue advocating for sustainability and integrating green principles into my future designs. By embracing innovation and adopting a holistic approach to architecture, I am confident that I can make a meaningful contribution to creating a more resilient and sustainable built environment.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue exploring new concepts and pushing the boundaries of architectural design. With each project and assignment, I am committed to deepening my understanding of environmental design principles and building practices, and to promoting sustainable solutions in my future endeavors as an architect. As I embark on the rest of my architectural education, I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, knowing that each experience will contribute to my growth and development as a designer and a steward of the built environment.
